Using Royal Icing to Decorate Chocolate Sugar Cookies

One of the first things that comes to mind when I think of Christmas is making cut-out sugar cookies (I love to bake almost as much as I love to craft!). I have wonderful memories of making and decorating Christmas cookies with my brother and sister. This year, to shake things up a bit, I decided to make chocolate sugar cookies and decorate them with royal icing. Now this may be hard to believe…but I have NEVER made royal icing before (the horror!). I have seen pictures of gorgeous sugar cookies decorated with royal icing and sprinkles and just assumed that it would be too difficult to even bother trying. Well, my crafty friends, this year I decided to make my first batch of chocolate sugar (cut-out) cookies and decorate them with…you guessed it…royal icing.

Before I began baking, I read a few blogs about how to decorate cookies. Many of them stated (quite a few times) that first time royal icing users should not expect perfectly decorated cookies. In fact, they said that it can take a lot of practice before getting the hang of it. Well, they were right! Now I hate to say it…but I am a perfectionist when it comes to the things I make (baking or crafting…doesn’t matter). So of course, I want my cookies to look like they belong on the cover of Food Network Magazine (ha-ha). Needless to say my chocolate sugar cookies probably wouldn’t make it on the cover of ANY magazine, however, for a first time royal icing user…I don’t think they are that bad!
Making the royal icing was easy. All you need is powdered sugar, meringue powder (I used Wilton) and warm water. If you wish, you can add a drop or two of flavoring such as vanilla extract. The most difficult part of making the icing is figuring out the proper consistency. You don’t want it too thick or it will be very difficult to pipe and you don’t want it too thin or it will run off of the cookie and make a big mess. Honestly, it is a trial and error process (another practice makes perfect scenario). Now there are all types of royal icing decorating techniques that I won’t even go into. Considering I have never even tried most of them…I wouldn’t know what I was talking about!
Even though I am by no means a royal icing expert…I will say that I really enjoyed making and decorating the cookies. I look forward to making more and perfecting my royal icing skills (if that’s possible). Oh…and by the way, the cookies tasted amazing and that’s the most important part.
